ANSWERING THE TELEPHONE

You always answer the telephone with the same French expression Allô?. This is only used when speaking on the phone. You can say this whether you are making or receiving the call, and for any type of call, formal or informal.

Allô, j’écoute?

If the person on the other end of the line asks for you, you answer elle-même if you are a woman, and lui-même if you are a man. This is a formal way of saying speaking. If you want to be less formal but still polite, you can simply say oui, c’est moi.
